INTRODUCTION TO SICHUAN UNIVERSITY

As one of the national key universities directly under the State Ministry of Education (MOE) as well as one of the State “211 Project” and 985 Project” universities enjoying privileged construction in the Ninth Five-Year Plan period, the present Sichuan University (SCU) was first incorporated in April, 1994 with Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST), then a national key university under the MOE, and then reincorporated again in Sept, 2000 with the West China University of Medical Science (WCUMS), a key university directly under to the State Ministry of Health in 2000. 

The former Sichuan University was one of the earliest institutes of higher learning in China, with a history dating back to Sichuan Zhong-Xi Xuetang (Sichuan Chinese and Western School), established in 1896. The predecessor of CUST is Chengdu Engineering College, set up in 1954 as the result of the nation-wide college and department adjustment. WCUMS originated from the private Huaxi Xiehe University (West China Union University), established in 1910 by five Christian missionary groups from U.S.A., UK and Canada.scu

Over the course of its long history, SCU has acquired a profound cultural background and a solid foundation in its operation.  The university motto “The sea is made great by accepting hundreds of rivers”, and university spirit of “rigorousness, diligence, truth-seeking, and innovation” are at the core of SCU’s raison d’etre. 

At present, Sichuan University is a first class comprehensive research university in Western China.  The University has established 30 Colleges, a College of Graduate Studies, a School of Overseas Education and two independent colleges, Jin Cheng and Jin Jiang College. These colleges cover 11 areas of study including: Humanities, Science, Medical, Economics, Management, Law, History, Philosophy, Agriculture, and Education.  

At Sichuan University there are 46 key disciplines at the national level, 66 key disciplines at the provincial level, 27 first class Ph.D. disciplines as well as 229 other P.h.D. disciplines, 346 Master’s Degree disciplines, 13 specialized degree programs, 126 Undergraduate disciplines, 28 post-doctorate interim-positions, 6 National Innovative Training Bases for Scientific Research and Curriculum Study, and a National Base for the Education of University Students in Culture and Ethics.

To achieve the goal of turning Sichuan University into a world class comprehensive research university, SCU believes that “putting people first, valuing academic research, and pursuing excellence” while targeting “cultivating students into social elites with profound cultural knowledge, solid specialized foundation, strong sense of innovation, and broad global vision”. The student population consists of 38,000 undergraduates, 20,000 postgraduates, 2,100 international students, and 300 students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

SCU has fostered co-operative ties with more than 150 world-renowned universities, educational organizations and foundations from 42 countries and regions. It has co-established platforms for high-level academic exchanges such as “Sino-US Institute for University Design”, “Jiuzhaigou International Laboratory for Ecology, Environment, and Sustainability”, “Sino-German Institute for Energy Research”, and “Western China Poverty-Alleviation International Research Center”, and other international level co-operative platforms. 

SCU is a member of the “10+10” alliance consisting of the 10 campuses in the University of California system and 10 Chinese Universities. Moreover, it is also co-training students with universities such as the University of Washington, Nottingham University, and Monash University in forms of “2+2”, “3+1”, and “2+1+1”, in order to enhance its international competitiveness.

English-medium Undergraduate Programs by SCU

1. Stomatology

Objectives

To produce highly-qualified dentists that posses systematic stomatological knowledge, clinical skills, and innovative techniques. 

Requirements

  • Must Posses the basic theories and knowledge of pre-clinical and clinical medicine.
  • Use stomatological knowledge and skills to resolve common ailments and frequently-occurring diseases of oral cavity and maxillofacial part, as well as initial treatment of the emergency, rare, and serious illnesses. 
  • Master basic knowledge and general skills of prosthodontics. 
  • Pass the National Practitioners Qualifying Examination.
  • Understand the principles, policies and statute of dental in China.
  • Master principle methods of information retrieval and data survey in order to perform research work in Stomatology. 

Major Disciplines:

Main Courses:

Oral Anatomy & Physiology, Oral Histology & Pathology, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology, Oral Mucosal Disease, Oral & Maxillofercial Surgery, and Prosthodontics

2. Clinical Medicine - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University offers  MBBS Program taught in  English to the overseas’ students. English is the language of instruction for the MBBS program and Chinese is a compulsory subject. The program comprised of two years of basic medical science, three years of clinical science training and one year of intership.

1.Recognition
West China school of Medicine of Sichuan University has been licensed by Ministry of Education,P.R China to enroll overseas students for the MBBS course in an English medium.There are only 34 medical schools out of 150 who have the authority to enroll international MBBS students in English medium in the list of year 2010. 
West China school of Medicine is listed in The World Directory of Medical Schools published by WHO.The International Medical Education Directory (IMED),Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECMFG) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). 
Since it's beginning in 2001 the university has enrolled nine batches of medical students from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, USA, Canada, Korea, Fiji, Cameroon etc into the MBBS courses. Six batches of international MBBS students have graduated from this medical school as of 2011. The MBBS graduates have excelled in the medical council licensing examinations in their respective countries including Nepalese Medical Council Licensing Examinations and Medical Council of India Screening Test Examinations while other graduates have passed USMLE licensing Examination to practice in USA and Australia Medical Council Licensing Examination to practice in Australia. Graduates of this medical school have been employed in reputed government or private hospitals in their home countries.

2. Duration of Course
Course duration is of 5 years + 1 year internship. The internship can either be done at the university hospitals or in one’s home country in a hospital recognized by the Ministry of Health of the concerned country. If the students want to do internship in the hospitals of the university they must pass HSK examination, as per regulations of MOE of China before the 6th year internship.

3. Medium of teaching  
West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University has been conducting MBBS courses in English medium since 2001.Most of the faculties have been educated in USA and Canada. Hence they can excellently teach the MBBS courses  in English medium. Every year the university sends more than 200 faculties to USA and Canada for education and training. West China School of Medicine is one of the best and  the largest in China. Over 50% of the doctors have experiences of work or being trained in foreign medical institutions.

Objectives
To produce internationally competent clinicians who posses solid medical knowledge, excellent clinical skills, and good professionalism.

Requirements
I. Principles:
  • Teaching of medical knowledge will be based on solid scientific principles and enable students to develop lifelong learning habits, with corresponding clinical skills and appropriate professional ethics.
  • Education will not only focus on the basic principles of medical science and clinical skills, but also develop students' analytical skills and their ability to make sound judgments based on evidence and experience.
  • The students will engage in effective medical internships under the guidance of senior physicians before graduation.

III. Basic Knowledge:
  • Basic Chinese language and today's China;
  • Mathematics, physics, chemistry, life science, behavioral science and social sciences, as they are related to medicine, and how to use this knowledge to guide their medical practice;
  • Body structure and function in human beings, human behavior, and normal state of mind;
  • Causes of common diseases and frequently-occurring diseases including mental illnesses, the impact of environmental, social, behavioral and psychological factors on the occurrence and development of diseases and the importance of disease prevention;
  • Pathogenesis, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and preventive ways of common diseases and frequently-occurring diseases;
  • Basic knowledge of pharmacology and clinical principles of rational drug use;
  • Normal pregnancy and delivery, common obstetric emergency treatment, principles of prenatal and postnatal health care, and family planning;
  • Health education and disease prevention, common diseases, disabilities, rehabilitation, hospice care, and general practice;
  • Knowledge of clinical epidemiology;
  • Basic patterns of development and spread of infectious diseases, and prevention of common infectious diseases;
  • Principles of fair and effective distribution of health care services and rational use of limited medical resources;
  • Basic characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medicine and its application based on an overall analysis of the patient's condition.
IV. Clinical Skills:
  • Collect medical history comprehensively, systematically and correctly;
  • Perform systematic and standardized physical and psychiatric examinations and write standard records;
  • Make and express accurate clinical judgments;
  • Diagnose and treat common and frequently-occurring diseases in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and other branches of medicine;
  • Diagnose and treat general emergency cases;
  • Select appropriate clinical diagnosis and treatment for patients;
  • Improve treatment methods in medical practice by using the principles of evidence-based medicine;
  • Communicate with patients and their families effectively and encourage patient cooperation;
  • Share their experience with doctors and other medical personnel effectively;
  • Analyze medical problems independently and acquire new knowledge and relevant information based on clinical practice, with the help of library databases and modern information technology;
  • Publicize relevant knowledge about healthy lifestyles and disease prevention to patients and the general public;
  • Study more independently and throughout their lives.

3. Energy and Environment

Objectives

To develop the intellectual and personal skills of the students to meet the 21st century challenges in energy and environment and to help the students to achieve a global perspective, and personal success. 

Requirements

  • Be familiar with the principles and practices of energy and environment; 
  • Have at least one concentration and research experience in the field of energy and environment; 
  • Be able to write academic papers in English
  • Accomplish a comprehensive essay upon graduation.

4. Software Engineering

Objectives

The Software Engineering Program has been designed to prepare students for a successful career in the software industry and the information technology sector as software engineering professionals with a high level of international competitiveness. Through challenging curricula and innovative courses that combines theory and practice, students will acquire a solid understanding of all aspects of software development, a profound comprehension of engineering economics and entrepreneurship in software practice, and a wide scope of knowledge and skills in engineering, computer science, mathematics and complementary studies that will provide students a base for life-long learning. 

Each course is delivered in English by an expert in their field, and generally includes periods of classes, practices, and group work in which students learn and apply principles, tools, and techniques in a real-world project environment. Class sizes are kept small to facilitate interaction and to promote effective learning. Each subject is taught at least once a year (some are taught two or three times) and most can be studied in any order, with the aim of helping to provide the kind of flexibility required by students with existing commitments.

Objectives

To educate and prepare students to succeed in the civil engineering profession by providing them with essential theories, knowledge, and engineer skills.

  • Possess the basic knowledge and literacy of humanities and social sciences through education and training in literature, art, ethics, history, sociology, and public relations.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the modern natural science such as; mathematics, physical sciences, chemistry, and so on. 
  • Understand the knowledge of civil engineering including engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, structural and geotechnical engineering, engineering material, structural analysis and design, foundation treatment, construction technology and management, engineering survey, structural test skills.
  • Be able to have access to information and process data, and demonstrate advanced communication skills.
  • Be able to conduct practical engineering designs, constructions and managements.
