Student Accommodation

INTO provides you with the best halls of residence experience on campus in Yiyuan No.2 and No.4 buildings. The accommodation is a popular choice with international students as it is conveniently located in the south of Nankai's campus and within 10-15 minutes’ walk of most shops, canteens, and teaching buildings.

Nankai University's dorms are comfortable and safe, similar to what you might expect to find at a US or UK university. Smoking is not permitted in the accommodation.

The International Student Building is located on campus and accommodation is offered as twin bedrooms with an en-suite shower room, TV, and internet access. You will share laundry facilities with students on your floor within the accommodation.

The accommodation is fully furnished and offers modern facilities, a healthy study environment and easily accessible campus facilities. There are also relaxation areas throughout the campus for your enjoyment.

Why choose on-campus accommodation?

The international student dorm is the best option for international students arriving in China, especially for the first semester.

  • Convenience – the dorm is close to everything you need on campus
  • Safety – 24-hour security and key card access mean that the international dorm is very secure
  • Support – the INTO China office is less than 5 minutes’ walk from the accommodation, so if any problems arise, the Student Services team can deal with them very quickly
  • Payment – Payment at reception is simple. Rent includes all bills (except internet fees) and there are no extra fees that you might find with private accommodation

Checking in to your accommodation

Most INTO China students are picked up from the airport by the Student Services team, who will assist with check-in. Students who do not require an airport pickup will also receive check-in assistance, by calling INTO China’s emergency phone number, which can be found in your Pre-Departure Guide.

Students will need to make payment for a deposit and three months' rent upon check-in. You will receive a yellow deposit/receipt slip which you should retain until you check out. All payments must be made in cash in Chinese Yuan RMB. No foreign currencies or card payments are accepted.

Safety

Safety on campus

It is very unlikely that you will encounter any kind of danger whilst studying at Nankai. Nankai district and Tianjin in general are very safe, but the usual precautions should be taken when walking around campus at night or when out and about in the city.  For peace of mind, there is a large network of CCTV on campus, as well as wardens situated at all road entrances, and 24-hour security at the reception of your accommodation building.

Keeping you safe and sound

From the moment you arrive in China, the INTO China team of student mentors will be there to support you with any issues that you may have. Our team will meet you at the airport and will accompany you to your accommodation.  Whilst in China you will be able to contact a member of the support team 24/7 using the emergency contact number. We understand that the initial language barrier can create challenges, but with assistance from the support from staff you will feel comfortable at all times during your study period.

Enjoying student life

Nankai offers modern sporting facilities that are available to use 7 days a week. Sporting facilities on campus include a stadium, gymnasium, tennis courts, football pitches, swimming pool and table tennis courts. Students will be able to have access to all of these facilities in addition to an on-campus bookstore, internet café, markets and supermarkets and banking facilities.

Nankai's campus is very central in Tianjin, so all the attractions of a vibrant metropolis are just a walk, bus or taxi ride away.

Accommodation facilities

Internet

The dorms allow wired internet access via an Ethernet cable (provided). this can be set up at the Mingzhuyuan Hotel reception, charged at RMB 0.1 per MB. To access the on-campus Wi-Fi, please see the INTO China Student Services team during your registration week.

Telephone

There is a landline telephone in your room, which requires a pre-paid telephone card (available on campus). These cards cannot be used to call internationally and even local calls will be relatively expensive. We recommend using an internet phone service (such as Skype or Wechat) for making international calls.

Laundry

There are communal laundry rooms on each floor. Machines are automatic, but you will need to add your own laundry detergent. Payment is made using a laundry card, which can be purchased from the INTO China Student Services office, costing RMB 3 per wash (RMB 20 refundable deposit per card).

Post

Post from home can be delivered and will be stored at reception in both dorms.

Dining

Yiyuan No.2 Building houses a buffet service restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Expect to pay around RMB 4 for breakfast and up to RMB 20 for lunch/dinner. There are plenty of dining options within 10 minutes’ walk of the accommodation, including campus canteens and other restaurants (including Mingzhuyuan Hotel).

Cooking is prohibited in university accommodation.

Costs

Accommodation can be rented for a variety of periods, to accommodate differing lengths of academic study and requirements. Longer periods of rental offer better value for money, as seen in the "daily rent" breakdown below.
