THE DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH

The Department of French of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), first started as the French Team of Beijing Foreign Languages School in March, 1950, is now one of China’s national-level specialized programs. The Department offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. It is also authorized to confer the professional degree of MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) in French.

The Department launched the journal Appendre Le Francais in 1980, which is the first French learning journal published in China, and enjoys wide and far-reaching influence. In addition, we house several research centers including the Research Center for Francophone Countries and Regions, the Swiss Studies Center, the Center for Belgian French Studies and the Quebec Studies Center. In 2015, we started our journal Cultures francophones.

We have a strong faculty of 24 full-time teachers, including 5 full professors, 8 associate professors, and 11 lecturers. Among them, 15 have PhD degrees. They specialize in 4 areas — linguistics, literature, translation and regional studies. In addition, we recruit 2 experts from France each year, and have 1 teacher from the French community of Belgium.

The Department of French has maintained its fine tradition for decades, paying great attention to the students’ ability to read, write, speak and translate in French, improving our curriculum, and combing language learning and cultural knowledge in our courses. Our undergraduate students perform extremely well in the national French proficiency test — TFS-4 (Test national du français enseigné à titre de spécialité, Niveau IV) and TFS-8 (Niveau VIII). They also win many awards and prizes in national French contests each year.

We offer programs targeted towards producing professionals with French language competence and good knowledge of French speaking countries and regions, who will  work in areas such as foreign affairs, trade, culture, media and publishing, education, tourism, etc. In addition, they will also acquire basic abilities to do academic research.

We have signed partnership agreements with 17 foreign universities including Paris Institute of Political Studies, University of Paris III, University of Paris IV, University of Montreal (Quebec), University of Laval, Free University of Brussels, University of Geneva, etc. Each year, we send 30 to 40 undergraduate and graduate students to these universities for short-term exchange study.

Our students enjoy good career prospects and have earned good reputation from employers for their solid language competence and overall quality. Our graduates are mainly employed in different government ministries, media organizations, colleges and universities, research institutions, provincial government agencies and large state-owned or private companies.
