The resurgence in graduate recruitment within the sector has pushed up starting salaries by almost 20% over the last two years. Investment banks often recruit students with proven analytical skills, so scientific degrees including mathematics or physics may serve you just as well as businessor economics

Those beginning law careers can expect an average starting salary of £38,000. Leading law firms now pay a quarter more than they did in 2007. You don't have to do an undergraduate law degree
 – graduate conversion courses are available – but it's not a bad place to start.

Graduates joining the armed forces command a £29,500 average starting salary. However, armed force graduate roles have dropped in starting salary more than any other sector since 2007, by a huge 47.9 per cent. The armed forces offer such a wide range of jobs that there's no obvious route in – according to this Army brochure, recent graduate officers have held degrees in everything from medicine to zoology.
