Computer Science and Engineering

Computer Science and Engineering is the core subject in the information age. It is also one of the fields that span across disciplinary boundaries and have found wide applications. China has made remarkable progress in the past decade, and information and communication technology has been the main driving force of its economic development. Computers have now permeated into all sectors and aspects of society and have been used in industry, commerce, finance, military, science and technology, education, media, entertainment, etc. With the advancement of computerization, the demand for computer scientists will become increasingly prominent. This is especially true in the Pearl River Delta area, where Computer Science and Engineering graduates with a world vision will be in very high demand in many industries.

CUHK (SZ) strives to become a world-class teaching and research institute, and is committed to carrying out cutting-edge research in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering. To realize this goal, staff of high-calibre has been globally recruited, curricula carefully designed, and campus facility purposely built. The first batch of undergraduate students has arrived in fall 2015. Students will have ample opportunities to interact with the teachers/researchers in classrooms and in research labs, although this programme mainly focuses on basic knowledge and skills.

Graduates will acquire a solid foundation in math, science and business, and will master a toolkit of widely applicable knowledge and skills that will place them at the leading edge of their chosen fields. The cross disciplinary trainings they received will allow them to excel in various professions, such as in finance, industry, government agencies and in pursuing research and development in academia.

Electronic Information Engineering

China's economic environment has undergone great changes in the past decade. Information and communication technology has become the main driving force of its economic development. New Internet-related products and services (online banking, online trading, etc.) are booming. On the one hand, the Internet technology has significantly changed people's daily lives, becoming an integral part of their business and leisure activities. On the other hand, society has in turn placed higher demands on the performance of the Internet. In the foreseeable future, the revenue generated from the e-commerce will exceed that from many traditional industries. In a few years’ time, the economy in the Pearl River Delta will likely be similar to that is in the United States: the Internet industry provides more employment than many other traditional industries. Shenzhen, as one of the most important base of IT industry in China, has a very high demand of IT professionals with a world vision.

CUHK (SZ) strives to become a world-class teaching and research institute, and is committed to carry out cutting-edge research and knowledge transfer in the fields of information technology, big data, new energy, international finance and logistics, etc. To realize this goal, staff of high-caliber has been globally recruited, curricula carefully designed and campus facility purposely built. The program will welcome the first batch of undergraduate students in fall 2015. Students will have ample opportunities to interact with the teachers/researchers in classrooms and in research labs, although this program mainly focuses on the basic knowledge and skills of electronic information engineering in the Internet era.

Graduates in Electronic Information Engineering will be at the leading edge of their fields, and master a toolkit of widely applicable knowledge and skills that will help create the future of IT. They will not only learn principles and techniques of information transmission, storage, processing, and analysis, but also engage in developing ideas, designing prototypes and even participating in technology transfer to commercial enterprises.

New Energy Science and Engineering

Production, conversion and storage of energy play a crucial role in the economy and national security of China. Recent public awareness of the non-renewability and environmental impact of fossil fuels results in increasingly stronger calls for the development of renewable energy. In the Pearl River Delta region, there are a number of companies producing solar cells and lithium-ion battery. In the whole of China, the research on alternative energy sources has been developing for a long time. Researchers in this field are mainly composed of professionals with experiences in traditional subjects like chemistry, physics and electrical engineering, etc. However, scientists and engineers with interdisciplinary knowledge and skills are required to solve the current energy crisis.

The discipline of New Energy Science and Engineering spans across discipline boundaries to explore revolutionary methods of carbon-free energy. It organically combines traditional subjects of physics, chemistry, materials science and environmental science, as well as more specialized disciplines, such as biomolecular engineering, photochemistry and electrochemistry. The programme is designed to prepare graduates to respond to the challenges of the energy crisis. This is a new program, the first of its kind in China, although there are some energy related programs, somewhat different in their emphases in other parts of the world. Key subfields in this program include: 1) Solar energy conversion (photovoltaic, biofuel); 2) Production and storage of hydrogen and fuel cell; 3) Energy storage (battery, supercapacitor); 4) New energy power generation (thermal power); 5) Energy efficiency and energy saving; and 6) Smart grid.

Our graduates are well qualified to work in new energy industry, including photovoltaic cell production, lithium battery and other related industries or in institutes pursuing new energy research and development. They will also find career opportunities in industries engaging in energy storage and conversion devices and power utilities, such as solar panel installation, solar farm operation, and battery driven car production.

Statistics

Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis and interpretation of data to obtain information and support decision-making. It has been widely applied in many fields, including from biology, medicine, and engineering to psychology, accounting, finance and government policy. With the development of sensing, communication, and computing technologies, data gathering becomes more convenient and economical than ever, so that massive compilations of data have emerged in all kinds of areas. Through appropriate modeling and analysis, Big Data can effectively promote inference, estimation, tracking, learning and decision making. However, Big Data is so huge and complex that it also brings new challenges besides opportunities. Hence, graduates equipped with a solid training in statistical and computing skills will play a key role in solving various statistical problems, especially the Big Data challenges. They will be sought-after by employers and will likely contribute to the modern economy in a significant way.

To meet the rising demand for well-trained Statistics graduates in the information age, the program’s curriculum is designed to encompass the core subjects of the field, while maintaining a balance between theory and practice. Topics covered include the foundations of statistics, computing and data management, statistical theories and methods, and statistical applications in business, finance, medicine, actuarial science, quality control and risk management science.

The Statistics program provides three streams for the students to choose, which are:

1) Data Science

2) Financial Statistics

3) Statistical Science

The graduates in Statistics are capable to work and succeed in the business world and government agencies, as well as go to graduate school for further studies in the fields of science, engineering, and business administration.
