About Shandong University of Science and Technology

Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST), founded in 1951, offers multidisciplinary education in engineering, the sciences, management, literature, law, economics and education, with a unique emphasis on engineering across all its courses. It is one of the five featured key construction universities of Shandong Province for cultivating graduates with excellent practical abilities.

The University now has three campuses located in Qingdao, Tai’an and Jinan, covering a total area of 243 hectares, with a floor space of 1.42 million square meters. The University’s total assets amount to 3 billion RMB, with teaching instruments and equipment at 0.6 billion RMB.

The University comprises of 19 academic colleges, nine directly-affiliated departments, four academies and one independent college. There are nine centres for postdoctoral studies, 43  doctoral programs, 127 master’s programs, and 83 undergraduate programs.     

The University boasts one nationally-recognized key discipline (under construction), one nationally-recognized key lab base co-founded by Shandong Province and the Ministry of Education, one state-local joint engineering center and 61 ministerial/provincial key disciplines, labs, and engineering centers, including one key laboratory and one engineering research center invested in by the Ministry of Education.

Over 40,000 full-time students are currently enrolled at SDUST, including more than 5,900 masters and doctoral candidates. Among a faculty of over 2,900, 268 are professors, including three academics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academic from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one candidate for the “State 2008 Outstanding Scientists Recruiting Project”, two  professors from the Taishan Scholar Program, and six overseas professors from the Taishan Scholar Program. 

SDUST is noted for its strengths in both basic and applied research and scientific development, thanks to its multidisciplinary features. It provides a solid academic foundation and has particular strengths in Mining Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Geological Resources and Engineering, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Computer Software and Theory, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Mechanical Design and Theory.

The University actively participates in international exchange and cooperation, with a view to internationalize its education. It has established a cooperative relationship with 112 higher learning institutions and research institutes in 23 countries and regions including the US, Japan, Germany, Russia, France, Australia, etc. Six Sino-foreign joint laboratories have been set up, and over 50 cooperative projects initiated. Joint-education and student exchange programs are underway with countries such as the US, France, Germany, Australia, and others. International students from more than 40 countries come to SDUST for a degree or short term study. More than 20 faculty members play leading roles in various international academic institutions.

The College of International Exchange

The College of International Exchange at Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST), established in 2007, is an administrative institution for the education of international students, and promotion of the Chinese language and international cooperative education programs, etc. It consists of an Admissions Office, an Academic Affairs Office, a Student Affairs Office, and an Accommodation Service Center. Faculty members of the College have a strong sense of responsibility and are dedicated to international education.

Ever since its establishment, the number of international students has been on a rapid increase. At present, there are more than 600 international students from over 50 countries, including the USA, UK, Russia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Mongolia, Vietnam and many African countries. They are studying at SDUST for a doctorate degree, master degree, or bachelor degree, or on a Chinese language program, non-degree semester program or pre-undergraduate program. The University provides international students with various scholarships including China Government Scholarship, Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship, SDUST Scholarship, Scholarship of SDUST Board of Trustees, Enterprise Scholarship, etc.

The College organizes a variety of campus activities for international students each year, including a New Year’s party, Graduation Party, Chinese Language Proficiency Competition, Photography Contest, and sports, etc, which not only enrich students’ daily life but also promote the internationalization of campus culture. In recent years, international students at SDUST have entered various competitions at a national and provincial level, and have achieved outstanding results.


Programs & Courses (Fully Taught in English)

A. Pre-undergraduate Program 

1. Introduction

The Pre-Undergraduate Program, offered in English for one year (application for half a year’s study is also accepted), is specially designed for international high school graduates who expect to get a bachelor degree in science or engineering. Through intensive training, it will greatly improve students’ abilities in maths, chemistry, physics and use of the Chinese language, helping to bridge the knowledge between senior high school and university, and preparing them for the degree-level study of science and engineering at university.

2. Course Design and Teaching Arrangements

Based on the cultivation objectives, the program is designed to be an intensive training program including the basic courses Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese Language. 

The program is divided into two semesters totalling 32 weeks, with each semester lasting 16 weeks. There are 288-course hours in one semester (96 hours for Maths, 96 hours for Physics, 64 hours for Chemistry, 32 hours for the Chinese Language course).

  • MATHEMATICS mainly covers Algebra, Plane Analytic Geometry, Limits of Functions and Derivative, transitioning to Calculus, equipping students with adequate high school maths abilities and prior knowledge of college maths.
  • PHYSICS include Mechanics, Thermology, Electromagnetism and Optics, with an emphasis on systematic teaching, providing a foundation for university-level physics.
  • CHEMISTRY, which includes Basic Chemical Principles, Elemental Chemistry, Basic Organic Chemistry etc, covers almost all the course content of high school Chemistry. The course design is streamlined in accordance with the teaching requirements of university chemistry.
  • CHINESE LANGUAGE is a comprehensive course that offers students an intensive training in Chinese characters, grammar, listening and speaking, in order to develop their ability to use Chinese as a tool in daily life.

3. Duration, Tuition and Application Deadlines

The pre-graduate program is a 1-year program. Tuition fee is 13,600 RMB per year. Application deadlines are mid-April or mid-September each year.

4.Graduation

Certificate of will be awarded and students are expected to continue to pursue a bachelor degree in science or engineering at SDUST.


B. Undergraduate Programs 

Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST) has been running three English-language undergraduate programs for international students since 2006, making it one of the earliest universities to do so in China, and since then it has cultivated hundreds of graduates. 

These three cutting-edge programs at SDUST boast an innovative course design, and some have been listed as a Brand Course for international students by the Ministry of Education in China. The Faculty members working within these programs are highly-qualified due to their PhD degrees,  educational background overseas, profound knowledge of the subject area, and innovative ways of teaching etc. 

The programs attach great importance to lab work, internships and practice, and opportunities are highly accessible due to close connections with many industries. After four years of study, students have a strong theoretical grounding and are practically capable, meaning that they are well received in enterprises or companies, or Masters or PhD programs. 

1. Mechanical and Electronic Engineering (Mechatronics)

Students in this program will learn fundamental theories of mechanical design, micro-electronic technology, fluid transmission and control technology, computer technology, and information processing technology, etc. The program aims to cultivate qualified personnel who have a solid foundation in math and mechanics, and interdisciplinary knowledge of machatronics, electronics, control and computer technology, etc. Students will gain strong abilities in the areas of engineering application and technological innovation. 

2. Telecommunications Engineering

This program aims to cultivate qualified personnel who have skills in research, design, manufacturing and operation for the field of telecommunication. Students in this program will learn theories of telecommunication systems and networks, and key technology and systemic knowledge in information transmission, exchange and processing etc. Students will learn the skills required for the design, development, testing and application of modern telecommunication systems and networks. 

3. Chemical Engineering and Technology 

Students will learn the principles of chemical engineering and chemical technology, and practice techniques and skills in chemical engineering experiments. The program also offers a foundation in engineering practice, products and technology development, the design of manufacturing equipment, research and design methods, and computer application etc. The program aims to cultivate qualified personnel who have strong capabilities in chemical engineering, petrochemical engineering, and coal chemical engineering, as well as matters of environment, biology, medicine, food, metallurgy etc. The students will learn the skills required for research, development and management in chemical engineering and technology. 

4. Software Engineering

This undergraduate program aims to train talents in the area of software engineering, who master the basic knowledge of natural sciences and social sciences, and master the basic theoretical and applied knowledge of mathematics, computer science and other related disciplines, and master the core theoretical, technical, and engineering principles and methods in software engineering, and be proficient in environments and tools of software engineering. The graduates shall obtain software analysis, design, implementation, and preliminary project management skills, and they shall get comprehensive practical training on software projects. Meanwhile, they shall also develop abilities of innovativeness, communication and collaboration. Graduates can pursue occupations of software analysis, design, development, operation and maintenance, training and education, etc. in scientific research institutions, colleges and universities, and enterprises.

5. Civil Engineering

Facing the future and meeting the needs of scientific and technological progress, national economic development and engineering construction, the purpose of the major is not only to cultivate high-quality talents who can grasp the basic theory and professional knowledge of civil engineering. Graduates can be engaged in the investigation, design, construction, management, scientific research, project consultation, investment and exploitation in civil engineering and related fields after graduation. Through 5 years of exercise, graduates can work with teams as project leaders or technical backbone or organizational managers and play an effective role in solving practical complex engineering problems. Simultaneously they can obtain technical titles of middle and senior professions or qualifications of nationally registered engineers and have the basic knowledge of academic research, the ability of self-learning, analysis and independent thinking.


Duration, Tuition and Application Deadline

Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, and Telecommunications Engineering are 4-year programs. The tuition fee is 18,000 RMB per year. Application deadline is end August each year.

Graduation and Degree

To get a BE degree, students have to pass all the exams across all courses, obtain the required credits, complete a graduation thesis and graduation project, and pass the thesis defence.


Accommodation

SDUST has three on-campus dorm buildings for international students. The living environment is elegant, clean and comfortable. There are several types of rooms which can meet different needs of international students. Facilities include bedding, a desk, a chair, a closet, a toilet, a shower, a public kitchen, an entertainment room and a laundry room etc.

Electricity

The university offers 120 Kilowatt hours of electricity to each room for free every month,and the electricity is supplied once a quarter. The remaining quota in a quarter will automatically be transferred to the next quarter. Excess consumption is charged at 0.55RMB per Kilowatt hour. Details of electricity consumption for each room will be shown to students every Monday and Thursday in the semester. All students shall pay attention to the consumption details and purchase electricity in advance.

Saving Electricity

1. Remember to turn off the lights, air-conditioner, PCs, stereos etc, when leaving the room to avoid unnecessary consumption of electricity.

2. Make good use of the natural sunlight and cut down the use of electric lights and air-conditioning. Open the window regularly to make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room.

3. Set your air-conditioner to an appropriate temperature and remember to switch it off before going to sleep at night.

4. Unplug your bath heater when leaving the dorm room for two days or more.


Dining

SDUST has more than 600 international students from over 50 countries, all with different dietary habits. International students have access to a wide range of food options to suit their taste. They can eat at the Campus Canteen, which has a variety of options, including Halal food. They can also cook in the public kitchen in the dorm building. There are all kinds of restaurants and snack shops outside the university. Students can also eat out or order food delivery.

About Qingdao
