World Fame with a Beautiful Location
Zhejiang University is located in east coastal city of Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, which lies 180km south of China’s largest commercial center Shanghai. As one of the seven ancient capital cities of China, Hangzhou has a history of over 2,200 years. The city is also a world-famous tourist resort praised as ‘a paradise on earth’, boasting very favorable natural conditions, with a mild climate, convenient transportation systems, picturesque scenery and rich cultural heritage. In the 13th century, the Italian traveler Macro Polo admired Hangzhou as ‘the most beautiful and splendid city in the world’.

Founded in 1897 as one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China, Zhejiang University is now a leading research university under the direct administration of China’s Ministry of Education. Reputed as the ‘East Cambridge’ in history, Zhejiang University has always been ranked among the top universities in China in terms of its academic strength shown in teaching, research and social service.
A Full Range of Disciplines and Strong Teaching and Research Staff
Zhejiang University is the most comprehensive university in China whose fields of studies cover 12 major branches of learning, namely philosophy, literature, history, education, science, engineering, economics, law, management, arts, agriculture and medicine. The University has 26 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and over 3,833 full professors and associate professors. Its 24 schools offer 252 doctoral programs, 324 master-degree programs, 113 undergraduate programs and various other learning programs for international students to choose from.
A Favorable Learning Environment
Zhejiang University is equipped with advanced teaching, research and recreational facilities on its five campuses, including computing centers, sports centers and recreational centers. With a collection of more than 5,940,000 volumes, the University library has over 100,000 e-books, over 17,000 full-text Chinese and foreign language journals. In addition, the University has 6 affiliated hospitals, which also serve as teaching and learning bases for students majoring in medicine and life sciences.
A Miniature International Community
The International College of Zhejiang University is a special teaching and administration unit responsible for the environment and placement of international students. There were over 5,700 international students from 140 countries studying in Zhejiang University in 2014. The college itself runs an undergraduate program in Chinese Studies in addition to various long and short-term programs of the Chinese language and culture. With students from a great number of nationalities, the college is virtually a miniature international community, which offers the students good opportunities to understand and experience different cultures.
